AIKA Launches the Pilot Institutional Accreditation Process

To ensure the effective implementation of cyclical institutional accreditation in higher education, Quality Agency for Higher Education (AIKA) will carry out pilot accreditation procedures, testing the regulatory framework, assessment process documentation and organisational arrangements.
In accordance with the selection procedure previously approved by the Academic Information Centre and agreed with the Ministry of Education and Science, and following an open application process, three higher education institutions have been selected to participate in the pilot accreditation:
- Art Academy of Latvia
- RISEBA University of Applied Sciences
- College of Fire Safety and Civil Protection.
This group of participants ensures the representativeness of the pilot project results and makes it possible to assess the suitability of the methodology in different institutional contexts, taking into account legal status, field of study, institutional size and type of higher education institution. This increases the applicability of the pilot project’s conclusions across the higher education system.
The pilot accreditation will be conducted in accordance with Cabinet Regulation No. 424 of 21 July 2026, “Requirements and Procedures for the Pilot Accreditation of a Higher Education Institution”, which sets out the requirements and procedures for the pilot accreditation of a higher education institution, including compliance assessment, quality assessment, and decision-making on the accreditation of a higher education institution. The pilot accreditation marks an important milestone in further development of Latvia’s external quality assurance system, putting cyclical institutional accreditation into practice and laying the foundations for a sustainable and fit-for-purpose quality assurance system.
